Heyes)

About the Trio

Beethoven’s Trio in G major was composed in 1794, soon after he arrived in Vienna and is originally for 2 oboes and cor anglais, probably composed for the growing number of amateur musicians in the city at the time. It was arranged for many instrumental combinations during Beethoven’s lifetime and this version for double bass trio is based on an arrangement by David Heyes created during his studies at the Royal College of Music in London (1980-83).

It has four contrasting movements, typical of the serenades by Mozart, and is a lively and engaging work which harks back to the classical age rather than looking forward to the 19th-century, demonstrating Beethoven’s mastery of classical counterpoint.

Ideal for the advanced double bass trio, the tasteful addition of pizzicato creates colour and contrast and the music transcribes beautifully for double basses. There are many technical challenges, with each player taking the role of soloist and accompanist in each movement, in music which abounds with 18th-century elegance and charm.

Op.87 suggests that the piece was composed around the time of Beethoven’s Symphony No.7, but it was published in 1806 in an arrangement for two violins and viola with the misleading opus number assigned by the Viennese publisher.

Ludwig van Beethoven

(1770-1827) is regarded as one of the greatest composers in Western music and was born in Bonn (Germany) but lived and worked in Vienna for much of his life. He was key in connecting the Classical age with early Romanticism, pushing all the boundaries and often breaking many of the accepted compositional ‘rules’ of the day, and his vast list of compositions, orchestral, chamber, piano music and choral works, attest to his genius. Most of his compositions remain at the very heart of the repertoire into the 21st-century.
