Aimed at the intermediate-advanced bassist, each piece explores the entire register of the instrument in a lyrical and expressive style, emphasizing the cantabile, sonorous and virtuosic qualities of the solo double bass.

The series aims to create new and accessible editions of neglected pieces including piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.

František Černý - Valse Fantastique
Valse Fantastique was first published in 1905 by Bosworth & Co. and was probably composed towards the end of the 19th-century. Influenced by the waltzes by the Strauss dynasty in Vienna alongside the extensive dance music written by his Bohemian contemporaries, Valse Fantastique is a beautiful romantic waltz which demonstrates the lyrical and sonorous possibilities of the double bass. In one extended movement, with clearly defined and contrasting musical themes, there are opportunities to demonstrate the singing qualities of the double bass in music which is both player and audience friendly.

Gustav Láska - Romanza No.1
Three Romances is dedicated to Georg, Prince of Saxe-Meiningen (1892-1946), and was first published by C.F. Kahnt Nachfolger (Leipzig), who also published Láska’s Concerto for Double Bass. Romantic in concept and design, Romanza No.1 combines long lyrical melodies with passages of virtuosity in engaging music which is designed to entertain. An animated middle section contrasts music of a singing style throughout the solo register of the double bass with an arpeggio-inspired piano accompaniment which adds support and delicate colours.

František Simandl - Divertissement Op.30
Divertissement is dedicated to Czech bassist-composer Břetislav Lvovsky (1857-1910), one of Simandl’s double bass students in Vienna. Essentially a theme and variations, Divertissement is a work of great imagination and invention, contrasting slow and lyrical music with virtuosic episodes which demonstrate the technical prowess of the bassist. An introduction and theme is followed by two variations and an Adagio, leading into an exciting and dramatic finale which brings the piece to a dramatic and successful conclusion. The piano accompaniment is mostly chordal and supportive, often adding color and rhythmic variety to the mix.

Rudolf Tuláček - Feuille d’Album
Feuille d’Album (Album-leaf) was composed in 1903 and is typical of the salon music of the day. Expressive and evocative melodies emphasize the singing qualities of the double bass across its solo register, with a gently supportive piano accompaniment which never overshadows the solo line.

About the Editor

David Heyes studied double bass with Laurence Gray and Bronwen Naish, later at the Royal College of Music in London, and completed his post- graduate studies in Prague with František Pošta (Principal Bass, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra).

He has given recitals and masterclasses in 20 countries over the past few years and has been a juror at a number of international competitions, three times as chairman.
