Élégie emphasises the lyrical and sonorous qualities of the double bass, primarily throughout its middle register, in music which has an easy charm and elegance. The chordal accompaniment adds support and character and this has much to say within its short time span.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003e12. Chant d’Amour is romantic in spirit and design with a wonderfully sentimental introduction and coda for piano alone. The two soloists complement each other beautifully and the double bass displays its singing qualities in its solo register.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003e13. Impromptu is rhythmically charged and energetic with contrasting sections which add both interest and variety. The accompaniment is supportive, adding colour and character, and the double bass is put through its paces in the form of a lively, bright and fun \u003ci\u003eperpetuum mobile. \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003e14. Hymnus has a calm and peaceful feel, written mostly in bass clef apart from a short foray into low thumb position, with a simple chordal accompaniment which adds stability and security. The solo line moves effortlessly between G major and E minor and there are few technical challenges in music of distinction and simplicity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003e15. Scherzo powers from beginning to end with a crisp and repeated rhythmic pattern which endlessly pushes the music to a successful conclusion. Moving through a series of keys, there are accessible technical challenges for the bassist, throughout its orchestral register, alongside a simple and chordal piano accompaniment which helps to keep the piece grounded and stable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis edition includes accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tuning.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAbout the Composer\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eAustrian bassist-composer Max Dauthage\u003cb\u003e \u003c\/b\u003e(1862-1937) studied at the Vienna Conservatoire with František [Franz] Simandl. He completed his studies in 1884 and joined the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, where he played until his retirement in 1918.
