Subtitled Seven Seaside Postcards and playable by quartet or larger forces, it only uses 1st position and easy harmonics in 4th position, alongside a range of bass percussion and playing effects.

Each piece offers solo and ensemble possibilities, with musical and technical challenges in equal measure. Recital Music publish a wealth of trios and quartets for young bassists enabling chamber music to be introduced at the very earliest stages of study.

Punch & Judy is a traditional English puppet show featuring Mr Punch, his wife Judy and a number of other characters, and its origins date back to the 17th-century and has its roots in the Italian commedia dell’arte. Nowadays, Punch & Judy shows are a typical seaside entertainment with one puppeteer inside a brightly decorated booth, known as a ‘professor’, who manipulates the puppets and also creates the voices. Slapstick comedy is used throughout and The Daily Telegraph newspaper described it as “a staple of the British seaside scene.”

Table of Contents

1. Fanfare - a short and dramatic fanfare announces that the performance is about to begin. The rhythms should be crisp and bright with a strong sense of excitement and anticipation. Each bassist is of equal importance and this is a dramatic opening to the suite.

2. Mr Punch is the main character and his music is fun and lively with a solo for Bass 1. The theme uses a repetitive rhythmic figure to create energy and drive alongside an accompaniment and bass percussion which adds drive and vitality. A feeling of slapstick, energy and fun should emanate throughout.

3. Waltz for Judy is lyrical and elegant and is a solo for Bass 2. The waltz feel is created by the other bassists, allowing the soloist to emphasise the lyrical and singing possibilities of the double bass. A few louder passages add contrast but overall, the mood is one of style and beauty.

4. The Crocodile is a fun and dramatic piece which is played pizzicato throughout with Bartok pizz. representing the snap of the crocodile. Bar 34 is played Bartok pizz. by Basses 1-3, with any rhythm and using any strings, and only ends when Bass 4 plays their note. The jazzy bass solos should be ‘laid-back’ and relaxed and with a jazz pizzicato technique contrasting the staccato accompaniment which should be classical and crisp. The bassists should speak the short narrations clearly and with good projection.

5. The Polite Policeman is steady and determined with the walking bass line depicting the policeman on his beat. This is a solo for Bass 4 and the piece shouldn’t be hurried but be played at a leisurely pace. The walking bass line should be prominent and nothing is hurried or urgent. “Move along! Move along! There is nothing to see here!” You might hear him say.

6. Joey the Clown is a lively and fun character and the piece can be played at a brisk speed. Bass 3 is the soloist and the addition of bass percussion adds a touch of slapstick comedy to the proceedings. The rhythms should be strong and confident, imagining the energy and excitement as the clown moves from prank or pratfall to the next. Keep the speed bright and vibrant.

7. Grand Finale: Let’s Party! brings everyone together for a jubilant party. The music is upbeat and happy, with plenty of rhythmic energy and momentum, and something of interest for each bassist. Bass percussion adds different sound effects and you could even speed up towards the end if you like. This is a fun, confident and vibrant end to the story of Punch & Judy.

About the Composer

David Heyes studied double bass with Laurence Gray and Bronwen Naish, later at the Royal College of Music in London, and completed his post-graduate studies in Prague with František Pošta (Principal Bass, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra).
