About the Composer
Abel Ferreira (1915–1980) was a Brazilian clarinetist. Self-taught, from an early age he played the accordion, then bamboo flute. He then played a 13-key clarinet, under the guidance of maestro Hipácio Gomes. He subsequently arranged and played the piano.
Later he moved to São Paulo, where he finally managed to become a professional musician. He recorded his first choro, Chorando baixinho, in 1942. The following
year, he went to Rio to play in casinos and on the radio. He made memorable duets with Zé da Velha and with Pixinguinha, with whom he recorded Ingénuo in 1958. In Abel's own stories, he composed more than fifty songs, including Acariciando, Coromandel's Luar and Cobra's Chorinho do Suvaco. He traveled all over the world and until his last
years of life, he continued to play the clarinet, in shows with Copinha and Raúl de Barros.
