A Note From Cole

I’ve studied Paul Chambers obsessively for the last 12 years. Understanding his playing on a technical and theoretical level is what separates the pros from the amateurs, as he is the foundation for truly learning how to solo on the upright bass. Understanding his use of chromaticism, his ability to play consistent eighth notes, and his command of the bebop language will all shift your mindset from thinking of the bass as not knowing how to solo to being comfortable with jazz solo vocabulary.

The shift is that you will start approaching the solos with the same fluency and freedom as your bass lines. Study the language and chromaticism, and you are studying exactly what was going through the head of a master like Paul Chambers, who set the pace for modern jazz bass playing and much more.

99% of “bassists” will never make it past a beginner level understanding because they want shortcuts, tricks, methods, and overnight results. Mastery like PC takes hours of deliberate practice, and the knowledge of bebop - and most people quit because they don’t address the real jazz language.

The trick is that masters like Paul Chambers were very familiar with creating tension and release, as well as playing long 8th-note lines. When it comes to the shed, you want to internalize the licks in this PDF so that they eventually show up in your playing. So, go through this document, learn the material, practice it daily, and you will emerge as a stronger bassist. When it comes to soloing and walking, people want tricks and methods. What they need are the fundamentals.

The Course

Join Cole in a 75-minute course breaking down each of the licks in the book. In this course, we observe how Paul Chambers laid out the foundation for you to learn how to play solos that sound like jazz.

Soloing can be difficult, especially when we're trying to play language made for the Alto Sax and other horns, and it feels like a struggle to play jazz solos on the bass. What you are trying to play is Bebop, and that's a language that wasn't developed for the upright bass.

You can try to learn a Charlie Parker solo, and you'll find issues in navigating his language on the bass. If you try to navigate his language on the bass, you'll be frustrated and find problems ranging from technique to range. You would need an entirely different instrument! And if you play a Charlie Parker solo without knowing Paul Chambers' licks, you might quit!!

The Essential Paul Chambers course addresses all of those challenges, providing a clear understanding of how Paul Chambers developed from Charlie Parker's language, incorporating licks, analysis, and observations from years of studying both Paul Chambers and Charlie Parker.
