About the Composition

A Box of Tricks is a set of six fun and engaging pieces for the beginner double bass trio. Using a limited number of note values, keys and articulations, the pieces are in 1st position, alongside a few simple harmonics in 4th position, and each can be repeated with the option of the players changing parts.

The dynamic markings are limited and each ensemble is encouraged to add their own to create a unique and exciting performance every time.

The pieces can be performed singly or in groups and in any order, with the aim of providing effective and accessible chamber music for the beginner bass trio, also playable by larger forces.

The edition includes a score and parts.

1. Bass Rock
You’ve got a whole rock and roll band here with melody, bass line and rhythm. Let each part have its place in the music and bring lots of energy and fun.

2. OK Chorale
The parts interweave with each other, forming intricate lines of counterpoint. Whilst the dynamics help to add shading and highlights to the music.

3. Three Quarters O’Clock
The parts work together to form a whole. Listen to how your part fits with the group and let the music flow.

4. Round Robin
After a short introduction, each part plays the melody in a round, then the piece completes with a cadence. Pay attention to the dynamics as you play through the melody and allow each part to shine.

5. E Street Blues
There are lots of different techniques here, practice moving from one technique to another. It may be helpful to notice when the rhythm of your part plays with another or its own thing.

6. Sunday Serenade
A gentle waltz with more rousing moments. Enjoy this piece on any day of the week, not just Sunday!
