About the Composition

Ten etudes, originally written for violin by J.F. Mazas, edited for double bass by Richard Duke. These etudes focus on melodic development across the entire range of the instrument. Each etude focuses on a specific technique, bow stroke or melodic phrase and its development. These etudes are perfect for the bassist who is looking for a serious workout on the instrument, while creating melodic phrases and expressive ability, not just repetitive exercises.

About the Composer

Jacques Féréol Mazas (1782-1849) was a French violinist, violist, composer, conductor and pedagogue. His compositions include chamber works for strings, concert pieces for violin and viola, numerous etudes and duets which he wrote for his students, as well as orchestral works and two operas. He performed across Europe, and held posts in Paris, at Théâtre du Palais-Royale, and in Orleans, at the Opéra Comique Theatre.
