About the Composition

Composed in memory of František Pošta and 'the Singing Double Bass' in 1991, this short lyrical contemporary solo explores beautiful and atmospheric sound worlds, but still within a recognizably tonal idiom. The music is heartfelt and sincere with bleakness of textures and expression, enabling the bassist to demonstrate more than simply technique.

Pieni Elegia (A Little Elegy) uses much of the range of the solo double bass and is evocative, ethereal, and inventive, and is always successful in performance. Pizzicato and arco techniques contrast sul ponticello, tremolando, and chordal effects, with a modern lyricism, is the overriding quality.

This edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tuning.

His music is evocative and atmospheric, shaped by jazz and contemporary styles, and the influence of the dramatic and bleak landscapes and vistas of his native Finland are captured throughout his music.
